Dance, as well as poetry, music, and visual arts were privileged among the noble elite. Still in the 19th century the famous French writer Alexandre Dumas enjoyed the exquisite are of the court dancers of Shamakha Khan (there are a lot of written and visual documents of those times). Nevertheless at the turn of the 20th century these traditions were substantially damaged because of dramatical changes in social life, but they did not disappear completely. These traditions were absorbed by the so-called stage dance, thanks to the endeavours of choreographers and dance researchers, who kept for new generations the movements, music, and costumes of the old dances, that thus received a second life from the first decades of the 20th century onwards. The dance melodies presented on this CD belong to this tradition. Their creative potential was not only realized through the staged form though: many elements of the court dance traditions were dissolved in a more trivial environment and continue to exist in folklore form. The melodies on this CD are mostly performed at wedding parties, because of their moderate mood and balanced rhythmical patterns. The selection represents a set of wedding dance melodies, connected with the various phases of an ethnic matrimonial ritual.Tracks:01. Sämäni [0:03:58.29]02. Mirzäyi [0:04:45.70]03.
